Shoes made out of paper?! What's next, condoms made out of lambskin?! Oh wait.... Unbelievable Testing Laboratory has spent many a month devising and refining their Light Wing Tyvek shoes, a pair of sneakers that weigh in at an impressively feathery 150 grams, or about 5.3 ounces, or about 1/3 of a pound, or about a Quarter Pounder...with cheese. They have already quadrupled their Kickstarter campaign's funding goal, with a pair of the barely-there foot cozies still up for grabs to new backers through August 1, 2013.
Light Wings gain their ultralight status from their predominant composition material, Tyvek, a textile of high-density polyethylene fibers that is known for its breathability--liquid vapors can pass through it, but not liquids themselves--and minimal mass. Tyvek was created by DuPont about 60 years ago, and has been selling as a commercialized product for the last 50. Most notably, it is used as a water and weather barrier on buildings, often installed beneath their exterior siding.
Incorporated into Light Wings, Tyvek maintains its waterproof nature--check out some of the videos on the shoes' Kickstarter page for evidence--while making its wearers feel all unencumbered and twinkled-toed. The footwear was designed to be unisex, with a first edition called Pencil available to KS backers. Anticipated delivery date is August 2013.
