Common Objects, Uncommon Materials

February 04 2014

On Kickstarter, the design group Unbelievable Testing Laboratory has almost tripled its funding goal for a line of paper shoes. Well, Tyvek isn't any old paper, of course. DuPont's flash-spun, high-density polyethylene fibers render the kicks mostly immune to water and tears. The material also keeps the shoes extremely light; even with the rubber sole, each one weighs a mere 150 grams. Take that, Vibram Five Fingers.
